I won't need to farm comp influence on the characters I decide to drop after I've done their stories, so I'll just farm on the one I do finally settle on.
It makes leveling a little easier but also less immersive, imo. Honestly, while I understand the quality of life adjustment b/c some classes got their healer/tank/dps comps later than others, removing unique roles for companions was a big nerf to the nuance of the game, particularly for the base 1-50 story line. Most of those comps are optional throwaways designed for completionists (myself among them, no offense!), but they're all totally interchangeable, just maintain affection levels on the comps you play with. And with the Eternal Empire story lines, the companion options just went bonkers and become 100% cosmetic. Once companions started being universal, the push to unlock your core companions fizzled away.
Not sure if you *need* to breakthrough with a story character first. Not sure why you'd want to do that as the best thing about BW games (including SWTOR as an MMORPG) is the nuanced story presentation, but I've gone 10-50 in WZs and then leveled through each xpack in WZs as well. I'm pretty sure you can level w/o doing class story, but only after you get your ship (unless something has changed in the past couple years).
